Ductile iron castings, also known as nodular cast iron, are created by adding small amounts of magnesium to molten iron, causing the graphite within to form as rounded nodules rather than flakes. This structure dramatically increases the metal’s strength, toughness, and ductility – engineering properties similar to low-carbon steel. Ductile iron is preferred for applications that demand durability under stress, the ability to bear heavy loads, and resistance to cracking or breaking such as replaced forgings, weldments and steel castings.
Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) castings are ductile iron components that have been heat-treated through an “austempering” process, resulting in a microstructure with exceptional strength, hardness, and wear resistance. ADI offers up to twice the strength of standard ductile iron while maintaining good ductility, making it suitable as a lightweight, cost-effective replacement for many steel parts in demanding environments.
